THE Ranking 2023: University of Bayreuth consolidates its position in international competition

Overview

University of Bayreuth, Presse release No. 179/2022 - 31 October 2022

In "THE World University Rankings 2023", the University of Bayreuth ranks among the top 15 percent of universities worldwide in research and among the top 20 percent in teaching. A total of nearly 1,800 universities were included in this ranking. A new ranking by THE, which has now been published, compares selected subject groups on a global scale and shows: With the broad spectrum of its disciplines, which allows for a large number of interdisciplinary collaborations, and through intensive cooperation with companies, the University of Bayreuth succeeds in positioning itself excellently in the international competition.

In business administration (BWL) and economics (VWL), the University of Bayreuth is ranked 126-150 worldwide. In a national comparison, it achieves fifth place and is thus, together with the University of Mannheim, one of the best smaller universities in Germany in the field of business administration and economics. No other universities of this size in Germany generate such high third-party funding income as a result of their cooperation with companies in this field.

The University of Bayreuth is also very successful in the field of engineering sciences due to its collaborations with industry and SMEs: Here, it ranks among the top 10 of all universities in Germany in terms of third-party funding income. The reach of its engineering publications is also great: No other German university of its size is cited so frequently with new results from research and development. In an international comparison, the University of Bayreuth is thus in the ranking group 251-300: The ranking exemplifies how strong the global competitive pressure is that smaller universities are now exposed to.

The University of Bayreuth also belongs to the ranking group 251-300 in the arts and humanities. Here, too, it is among the top 10 universities in Germany in terms of third-party funding from industrial collaborations, and it ranks 15th nationwide in the range of its scientific publications. In the life sciences, social sciences and computer science, the University of Bayreuth is ranked 301-400 internationally. However, it is well above the global average and also above the national average in numerous individual scores that are included in these rankings.

"The new global THE ranking, broken down by subject group, shows: Outstanding research projects, study programmes and industry collaborations in key fields of the future are now distributed globally among a large number of locations that are both interconnected and in strong competition with each other. With the breadth of its disciplines, the University of Bayreuth has so far been able to position itself excellently in this competitive environment. In the coming years, we will push our worldwide networking in research and teaching as well as our thematic focus on global topics of the future – for example in the life and environmental sciences, in energy research or in the field of artificial intelligence – even more intensively than before. The very good results in the area of industrial cooperation also prove that the University of Bayreuth is thus an important and successful innovation driver for its own northern Bavarian region," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, President of the University of Bayreuth.
